Introduction to Camping and Caravan Sites

Welcome to the area dedicated to issues that apply to Camping and Caravan sites.  You will also find general health and safety guidance in the 'A-Z'.  This information is relevant to all industry groups regardless of activity.  From here you can also access 'Statutory Guidance' and our 'Ask the Expert Facility'.

Not only will you have employees to take care of but members of the public who frequent your premises making use of your services as well as contractors and visitors.

The Council licenses sites used for mobile (park) homes, static holiday caravans, touring caravans and tents. Licenses are issued under the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 and the Public Health Act 1936 for tents and moveable dwellings.

Councils inspect all licensed sites to ensure that they comply with standard conditions imposed to safeguard the health and safety of occupiers and visitors to the sites. The main functions undertaken by the council team are: -

  • Routine inspection of sites across the County.
  •  Advisory visits to sites on request.
  •  Investigation of reportable accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences in relation to the site.
  •  Responding to complaints from the public and employees concerning health and safety standards on the site.
  •  Provision of advice and training in relation to health and safety matters.
  •  Special surveys and enforcement initiatives.
  • Licensing and inspection of caravan and camping sites.
  • Licensing and inspection of petroleum, explosive and poisons stores.

Site owners have obligations to provide a safe and secure environment for their employees and clients. When people go camping or caravanning there is often a holiday atmosphere prevalent, which could result in site users being less than vigilant about safety issues.
